The Danger of Diet Soda!

I know a lot of people have concerns about obesity and the health consequences of this national epidemic.

Many people, in their attempt to lose weight, turn to artificially sweetened soft drinks. However, artificially sweetened beverages have been cited as risk factors for heart attack and stroke as well as dementia.

This association was the subject of a recent study published in the medical journal Stroke with the data coming from the Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort.

In this research, 2888 people over the age of 45, and 1484 people over 60 were studied. Participants reported their consumption of beverages over a 10 year period, and researchers looked at how many of them developed stroke or dementia (Alzheimer’s disease).

After accounting for age, sex, education, smoking, activity level, and a number of other pertinent factors, here is what they found:

higher intake of artificially sweetened soft drinks was associated with an increased risk of stroke and dementia.

Sugar-sweetened beverages were not associated with stroke or dementia (but they are still a major source of other health issues, including obesity).

Drink water instead!
